- Raises pH Level in Acidic Soil
Basic Slag, also called Thomas Slag, is a byproduct of open-hearth steel making. Commonly used in agriculture as a soil amendment to raise the pH level (lower the acidity) of highly acidic soil. Its pH-raising effect is similar to that of ground limestone, but has the added benefit of provides calcium, magnesium, and slow-release low-phosphate.
Soil should be tested to determine the correct amount of basic slag to apply. However, as a general rule of thumb, to increase the pH by one step on the scale, use approximately 6-9oz of basic slag per square yard (about 200-300g per square meter).
