Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a very fine powder of a unique, naturally occurring mineral deposit, containing about 65% DE (skeletal remains of diatoms) and 35% Montmorillonite (calcium rich volcanic deposit).
Typically used as an anti-caking agent in various food products and a safe, natural, insecticide applied to many organic seed and grain crops. DE is suitable for organic gardening and pest control. Common uses for DE include:
Filtration
- DE is used as a filter medium, especially for swimming pools, drinking water, and fish tanks.
Abrasive
- DE is a mild abrasive and has long been used in toothpaste, metal polishes, and even facial scrubs.
Pest Control
- DE is a safe and natural insecticide. The abrasive properties of DE damages the exoskeletons of insects, causing them to dehydrate and die. Commonly used in lieu of boric acid, DE is widely used for insect control and anti-caking in grain storage as well as pet and livestock dry food and is effective for helping to control and possibly eliminate bed bug, house dust mite, ant, cockroach, and flea infestations.
