There are many factors that you should consider beyond the plant’s natural growth habit, such as your growing style and where you are geographically situated.
Here are some factors we consider when designing the most ideal potting mix for your orchid: type of orchid, watering habit, pot size, growing space, specimen size, and geographical location.
All our mixes include Bamboo Charcoal
Bamboo Charcoal is an amazing addition to any orchid potting mix due to its ability to absorb excess water in the root zone of the pot, discouraging the plant from contracting bacteria, fungus, and rot. The main reason why people are unsuccessful in growing their orchids is often attributed to the overwatering of their plants. Growers often have this misconception that orchids enjoy being always in an overly wet potting mix because of the large amounts of rainfall they receive in their natural habitat. Many of these orchids grow as epiphytes on tree branches with a thin layer of moss over their root zone. They may be receiving a lot of water, but the root zone is only retaining a small percentage of that rainfall while drying off between precipitations.
Bamboo charcoal also can rid the potting mix of some impurities, similar to its usage in health and beauty products or Brita water filters. If you have bad water quality in your area, bamboo charcoal is a great substrate to help facilitate the cleansing and flushing of toxins as a natural filter. It promotes good aeration, acts as a soil conditioner, and encourages good drainage.
Our Bamboo Charcoal is sustainably sourced from Taiwan and considerably more environmentally friendly and responsible when compared to traditional hardwood tree charcoal. Because bamboo can reproduce and grow quickly, it is considered a good source of material as a replacement or alternative to traditional hardwood.
